The sexual revolution occurred decades ago, and Christians are now presented with another opportunity to challenge [the sexual revolution]. Yet in challenging it, Christians must understand that at its heart the sexual revolution is not about homosexuality or same-sex marriage but about human sexuality and relational fulfillment. The primary reason Christians have not had the fortitude and conviction to challenge our culture on the issue of same-sex marriage is that a growing number of Christians now doubt the traditional Christian teaching on human sexuality and feel it is wrong to condemn consensual sexual behavior...
...The sexual behavior and attitudes of many Christians deviate so significantly from traditional Christian teaching that it is no wonder an increasing number of Christians have been unwilling to hypocritically impose different standards on practicing homosexuals

1 Response to "The Sexual Ethic of Christians Indifferent Towards Homosexuality"

  1. If a Christian truly understands that "At its heart the sexual revolution is not about homosexuality or same-sex marriage but about human sexuality and relational fulfillment," then they should also understand that we should not challenge the sexual revolution in congress, but that we need to be seeking to change the hearts and minds of the revolutionaries. As Christians we know that human sexuality ultimately resides within relational fulfillment, and that relational fulfillment lies within unity with Christ.

Furthermore, it is "wrong to condemn consensual sexual behavior," not because we doubt the traditional Christian teachings (though sadly, many do), but because we are not given the right or responsibility to judge or condemn non-Christians. Who are we, to impose standards on anyone but ourselves? Or, should we run the risk of repeating the mistakes of the Pharisees? Instead we should show a heart of love, and a spirit of compassion for those who live outside of our standards, but making it clear that as Christians, we are called to live to a higher standard (which we also fall short of).

Should we be indifferent towards homosexuality? Absolutely not. Yet we would do well to remember that we do not own the corner on morality and righteousness, we merely reside under the banner of the One who does.
