On Thursday morning, we got a call from the post office saying that our baby chicks had arrived. We ordered 10 females, but got a bonus 10 males to go with them! Apparently, the females would not have been warm enough to survive the shipment, so they needed a posse of males to keep them warm. We didn't know what to do with the males, but a family from church took them and will eventually butcher them. Mmmm...

Anyways, our chicks are very cute. They are growing pretty fast. Within a day, they had already started growing feathers on the tips of their wings (as opposed to the cute fluff they have now). At first, we thought they had just been pooping on each other, but it was just little feathers.

It's amazing how much they can do so quickly. At two days old, they can eat, drink, hop, and wobble around. Now (at four days), they scurry around their "pen" (cardboard box) in our kitchen and are already trying to fly. They like to cuddle in a pile, and then one will run up and jump on top. It's kind of like that game where people hold on to each other in a line, and then they see how many people can jump on top before the whole thing collapses.

They do lots of stretching, which I would do too if I had spent a month in an egg. They cheep a lot. They poop a lot. They scatter their food everywhere. They peck at the cardboard box, which sounds like someone is knocking at the front door.

And...we've decided on their names!

The darker chicks are the Black Star breed. They are named after British politicians and leaders: William Wilberforce, The Duke of Wellington, Lord Nelson, Winston Churchill, and Sir Thomas More.

The lighter chicks are Rhode Island Reds. They are named after British monarchs: Richard the Lionheart, William the Conqueror, Henry VIII, Bloody Mary, and Victoria.
