Last week we started taking the chickens outside for a little bit every day. Sometimes we'd even read books with them down in the pen:
Marijke likes sitting on the ground because the chickens have gotten so friendly that they will often come up and sit on our laps:
Last weekend, my friend Phillip helped me make the gate for the pen. Because almost nothing about the fence is square, the gate has to be held closed with a large rock:
A couple days ago, I buried some large PVC pipes, strung a rope between them, and draped bird netting over it. Experienced chicken owners keep telling us horror stories about how their chicken died from hawks/foxes/coyotes/raccoons/their dog/their cat/their neighbor's dog/falling off the coop, and so we are doing everything we can to protect them:
Some more of our winter vegetables are coming in. Broccoli:
Snow Peas:
Today, I planted about 25' of potatoes and put a few Artichoke seedlings into the ground, protected from gophers by chicken wire cages. I also realized that some of the potatoes I planted a couple months ago (but assumed had rotted) are actually growing!
